  • The discovery of electricity has changed the world. For the first time in history, electricity provided cheap and convenient energy for homes and businesses. It also allowed us to take for granted the internal combustion engine and many of the features we drive in cars and trucks. Electricity is used to start them and keep them going. This is especially important for the lights and signals required for safety and comfort in vehicles. This section of the Grote Know-How self-help guide is dedicated to understanding the basics of electricity… what it is and how it works.
  • How electricity is created Electricity is based on the interaction of the components of atoms, the basic elements that make everything around us. Atoms have a nucleus, a central cluster of “protons” and “neutrons”. The nucleus is surrounded by orbital (orbital) elements known as “electrons”. Protons have a positive charge. Neutrons are neutral – they have no charge. Electrons have a negative charge.
